The call came in on a Tuesday. Kitchen’s too dark, she said, and she’d already bought what she needed, three boxes stacked in the dining room, still taped shut. Would I come hang them?
I went out. I didn’t hang them.
Most of what people think is a fixture-count problem isn’t one, and light fixtures are an expensive thing to be wrong about.
What I Found in That Kitchen
Brookside ranch, early sixties, eight-foot ceilings, original layout with uppers running down both walls. She flipped on everything she had. Ceiling light dead center, two pendants over the island. Still couldn’t read a recipe card on the counter.
She stood at the cutting board for about four seconds and there it was.
Her own shadow, laid right across the work area. Every source in that room was mounted behind her, and overhead light lands on your shoulders, not your hands. More light fixtures in the same plane would’ve just lit up more of her back.
Size Tells You Something. Not Enough.
Square footage is where I start because I have to start somewhere. A 10-by-10 bedroom does fine on one ceiling fixture and a lamp on either nightstand. Put that same fixture in a 20-by-20 family room and you’ve lit a circle.
Then I ask what you actually do in there, and that usually moves the number more than the tape measure did.
Guy over in Todd Estates put four light fixtures in his den before I ever met him. Worked exactly as advertised. He also told me nobody sat in there anymore, which is a rough way to lose an argument with your own ceiling.
The Layer Almost Everybody Skips
Ambient fills the room, task lights the work, accent shows off whatever you’re proud of. What’s missing is almost always task.
Back in that kitchen it ran about twenty-five dollars. Under-cabinet LED strip, 3000K, stuck to the underside of the uppers and tied into the switch she already had. Ten minutes of real work. Those three boxes went back to the store.
Ceiling height shifts things too. At eight feet a flush mount earns its keep, because the light doesn’t have far to fall before it hits something useful. The vaulted addition somebody tacked on the back in 2004 is a different animal same fixture up there mostly lights the ceiling.
Daylight I mostly ignore when I’m counting light fixtures. A room that’s beautiful at two in the afternoon needs all the help it can get at nine at night, and nine at night is when the phone rings.
When It Stops Being a Saturday
Straight swap, old one down and new one up: 45 minutes, unless the wire nuts have opinions.
Cutting in a new box, fishing cable across a plaster ceiling, running a switch leg plan on most of the day and don’t schedule anything after it.
Older Newark houses are where I earn the money. Circuits shared in ways nobody wrote down. Ceiling boxes that have carried a 12-pound flush mount since the Kennedy administration and are nowhere near rated for the 35-pound chandelier sitting in your hallway. I check that load before new light fixtures go up, every time.
The paperwork’s real too. Delaware moved to the 2023 NEC on January 1, 2026. New Castle County doesn’t inspect electrical work itself a licensed inspection agency handles that, with a Delaware master electrician pulling the permit. There’s a homeowner permit available, but only for the house you actually live in. Not the rental.
What Shows Up Eighteen Months Later
Overload a circuit that was already carrying the kitchen, or hang real weight on a box that can’t take it, and nothing goes wrong that afternoon. It goes wrong the following February. How many lights do I need per room?
No chart survives contact with a real house. Small bedroom, one ceiling fixture and a couple of lamps. A working kitchen might want six or seven light fixtures spread across two layers. Ceiling height and what you do in there decide it.
Can’t I just put brighter bulbs in?
Cheapest thing on the list, so start there. Evenly dim room, more lumens help. Dark corners or shadow on a counter, that’s placement, and no bulb ever made fixes placement that’s moving or adding light fixtures.
Do I need a permit to add a ceiling light in Newark?

Why is my counter still dark with recessed lights in?
Because you’re standing between the can and the counter. Anything set toward the middle of the room lights your back. Under-cabinet strip fixes it in an afternoon and you never touch the ceiling.
How far apart should recessed lights be?
Beam spread and ceiling height matter more than any rule of thumb. On an eight-foot ceiling I’ll start around four to five feet between light fixtures, then work around cabinets and joists.
