Prepare Your AC for Warmer Weather
Spring is finally here, and you know what that means, it’s time to think about your air conditioner! I know, I know, probably not the most exciting thing on your spring to-do list, but trust me, your future sweaty summer self will thank you for it.
Here at Boulden Brothers, we’ve seen what happens when folks forget to prepare their AC systems before the temperatures start climbing. Let me walk you through some simple steps to make sure your home stays cool when the heat waves hit.
Start With the Basics: Change That Filter!
If there’s one thing I wish every homeowner would remember, it’s this: change your air filter regularly! It’s such a simple thing, but you wouldn’t believe how many service calls we get that could have been avoided with a fresh filter.
When your filter gets clogged with dust and pet hair (we all have that furry friend shedding everywhere, right?), your AC has to work overtime to push air through. This means higher energy bills and a system that’s more likely to break down when you need it most. Take five minutes now to swap in a clean filter your wallet and your AC will both be happier for it.
Give Your Outdoor Unit Some TLC
Your outdoor AC unit has been sitting out there all winter, collecting leaves, twigs, and who knows what else. Before firing it up, head outside and clear away any debris around the unit.
While you’re out there, take a look at the condenser coils (those fin-like parts on the outside). If they’re dirty, they can’t release heat properly, and your system becomes way less efficient. A soft brush or the brush attachment on your vacuum can gently clean these just remember to turn off power to the unit first!
I was at a customer’s home last week where a family of birds had built a nest right on top of their outdoor unit. Needless to say, their AC wasn’t working too well with that extra “insulation”!
Don’t Forget About Your Ductwork
You can have the best AC unit in the world, but if your ducts are leaking or clogged, you’re still going to have problems. Take a peek at any visible ductwork for obvious issues like disconnected sections or dusty vents.
If rooms in your home never seem to get cool enough or if your allergies act up when the AC kicks on, you might need a professional duct inspection. Small leaks can lose up to 30% of your cooled air – that’s like throwing money right out the window!
Check Your Thermostat
Is your thermostat still working properly? Before the real heat arrives, test it by setting it a few degrees below room temperature and ensuring your system responds.
If you still use an old manual thermostat, consider upgrading to a programmable or smart model. These can save you money by automatically adjusting temperatures when you’re not home. Some of our customers have reported saving up to 15% on their cooling costs after upgrading!
Warning Signs That Scream “Call a Pro!”
While there’s plenty you can do yourself to prepare your AC, some things are best left to the professionals.
Here are some red flags that mean it’s time to give us a call:
- Strange noises coming from your system (grinding, hissing, or banging)
- Your AC runs, but the air coming out isn’t cool
- The system keeps turning on and off rapidly
- You notice water pooling around your indoor unit
- There’s a funky smell when your AC runs (musty or burning odors are never good)
If you spot any of these issues, don’t wait small problems can become big, expensive ones if ignored. Remember our motto, You call. We come. It’s fixed.
Why Professional Maintenance Matters
I always tell my customers that skipping yearly maintenance is like skipping oil changes for your car eventually, something’s going to break down. When we come out for a professional tune-up, we do a comprehensive check of your entire system. cleaning coils, checking refrigerant levels, testing electrical components, and making sure everything’s running at peak efficiency.
Last summer, we had a customer who hadn’t serviced their AC in five years call us in a panic during the hottest week of July. Their system had completely failed, and replacement parts were backordered. Had they scheduled regular maintenance, we could have caught the warning signs months earlier!
Common Questions We Get Asked
- “How often should I really have my AC serviced?” Once a year, ideally in spring before you need it running full-time. Think of it as your AC’s annual physical!
- “Is it normal for my electric bill to double when I start using my AC?” Your bill will increase, but if it’s doubling, something might not be working efficiently. That’s definitely worth having us take a look.
- “My AC is only a few years old. Do I still need maintenance?” Absolutely! Even new systems need regular care to keep them running efficiently and to maintain your warranty.
