You turn the heat on for the first time all year and the house smells like a toaster. Or like something plastic is melting behind a wall somewhere. So you stand in the hallway with your hand near the thermostat, trying to decide if this is a call.
Depends on what you’re smelling. Most of the time that furnace smell is nothing.
Usually It’s Just Dust
Your furnace hasn’t run since March. All summer, dust has been settling onto the heat exchanger and around the burners, and the first time that metal gets good and hot, it cooks off. Smells like a hair dryer somebody left in a closet. Half of Newark notices it the same week, because that’s the week everybody finally caves and turns the heat on.
Two or three cycles and it’s gone. Half an hour of runtime, maybe two hours if it’s been sitting.
Here’s the part people get wrong, though. Dust smell fades. Every cycle it’s a little weaker. I’ve had folks ride out a solid week of it telling themselves it’s seasonal, and by the time they call me it was never dust to begin with. Thursday’s furnace smell should not be Monday’s furnace smell.
Burning Plastic Isn’t Dust
Guy off Marrows Road called me in November, said his house smelled like melting crayons. Came and went for about a week, he told me, but the kids were cold so he kept running it.
Blower bearings were seized. Motor was pulling way more current than it had any business pulling, and the windings were slowly baking themselves. We caught it at a motor. It doesn’t always stop at a motor.
Electrical smells don’t read like dust and you’ll know the difference. Sharp. Chemical. Like a hot extension cord. Wire insulation cooking, or a motor cooking, and either way it won’t fade no matter how long you let the thing run.
Shut the power off at the switch on the furnace, or at the panel. Then call. Restarting it to check whether the furnace smell is still there is how this gets expensive.
Rotten Eggs, Everybody Out
Rotten eggs or sulfur around a gas furnace. Go outside. Now, not after you check the basement, which is what everybody wants to do.
Don’t touch a light switch on your way out. Don’t hit the garage button.
From the driveway, call Delmarva Power at 302-454-0317. They’re the gas utility for all of New Castle County and they run that line around the clock. Or just call 911.
If you’re out past the mains on propane, same deal, except propane sinks instead of rising, so it’s sitting on the basement floor. A gas furnace smell is not a wait-and-see.
Why Does It Come Back Every Time?
A furnace smell that shows up with every burner cycle, that’s usually not the furnace. The furnace is just the thing moving the air around.
Filter first. A pleated MERV 11 that’s been in since spring is packed with dust, and dust holds odor. A loaded filter chokes airflow besides. Twenty bucks, five minutes. The only piece of this I’d have you do yourself.
Then the returns. A lot of Newark’s ’50s and ’60s ranches run return duct through an unconditioned basement, and the second a seam opens up, that duct starts breathing whatever’s down there. Mildew off the block wall. The gas can for the mower. The furnace hauls it upstairs and takes the blame.
Cracked heat exchanger is the one you don’t chase yourself. And in New Castle County, swapping a furnace is permitted, inspected work through Land Use. Not a Saturday.
Before It Gets Cold
Pre-winter heater maintenance is really just catching all this in September instead of January. We pull and clean the burners, look the heat exchanger over, test the safeties. You call. We come. It’s fixed. Do it now and you’re not the guy waiting on a 2 a.m. call-out with half of Newark ahead of you.
Frequently Asked Questions
It smells like burnt dust but only for like 10 minutes, is that bad?
Nope, that’s the burn-off. It should get weaker every time the burner fires until one day you stop noticing. If it’s exactly as strong a week from now, that’s different.
how long do i wait before calling someone
Dusty and fading, give it two or three cycles. Sharp, chemical, anything like melting plastic, zero cycles. Shut it down and call. The cheap repair and the expensive one smell the same on day one.
can a dirty filter really make my whole house stink
It can, yeah. That filter’s been sitting since spring collecting dust and picking up moisture, and every bit of heated air in the house passes through it. Change it, run the furnace, see if the furnace smell goes with it.
do i really need this every year or is that a sales pitch
Fair question. Newark runs heat from about mid-October into April, so that’s six months of hard use on something that sat idle all summer. Heater maintenance catches dirty burners and worn parts before they turn into odor calls. Most manufacturers want it documented to keep the parts warranty good.
smells weird and it’s clicking now, should i be worried
Clicking at startup is the igniter, that’s normal. Clicking over and over with nothing lighting is not. Put a furnace smell on top of that, shut it off and call. A system trying and failing to light is telling you something.
Smells the same tomorrow as it does right now, it isn’t dust. That’s about the whole test.
