What is Indoor Air Quality?

System maintenance goes beyond your air conditioner. It also includes your system’s air filters. Proper air filter maintenance can both save money and prolong your system’s life. But which one is right for you? Hi. I’m Dan, your Boulden Brothers Answer Man. Taking better care of you is the Boulden Brothers way. That’s why we put together this video. Just as air conditioners have a SEER rating, air filters have a MERV rating, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values. The higher ratings, the greater filtration. But for the good of your system, don’t exceed a rating of 12. Your choice of air filters fit into four general categories. Basic filters are disposable, and built with about an inch of thick spun fiberglass to block larger particles. While these are lowest in cost, they also carry a lower MERV rating. Pleated filters are the most popular option. Their pleating covers a larger surface area, making them more efficient. While more expensive, they’re also more efficient, earning a higher MERV rating. Electrostatic filters require cleaning or replacement to maintain efficiency. Disposable versions have higher MERV ratings, and cost less than permanent electrostatic filters, which can last up to eight years. HEPA, or High Efficiency Particulate Air filters, are often found in hospitals and aircraft, and require a separate system to fully block 99.97% of sub-micron particles. Is the most expensive filter the best? Not necessarily. Look for a sturdy design, including pleated material, internal wire structural support, and outer lattice and edges that offer additional support. Measurements are critical. Check your existing filters dimensions. Or measure the height, width, and depth of the area where your filter is placed. Another option is a media filter. Install by a professional, these filters only require maintenance semi-annually. Although a filter keeps most dirt from infiltrating an air handler, small particulates can still bypass the filter, creating a layer of grime on the evaporator coils, potentially resulting in an annual efficiency loss of about 5%. For optimal performance, your air conditioner should be inspected annually. Your filter protects both your equipment and your indoor air supply. Mark your calendar as a reminder to begin every cooling season by changing your system filters. Even if you don’t need us right now, Boulden Brothers is here with our on-time guarantee. Did you know there are pollutants that are floating around your house right now? What will stop them? No matter how much you clean your house, there will always be dust, allergens and other particles that make their way into the air. They have varying effects on members of your household, depending on personal sensitivities and allergies.

If you want to do something about your home’s indoor air quality, just give us a call today. We offer an extensive variety of home air cleaners and air filters that can almost entirely eliminate these types of particles from your indoor environment. And if you’re not sure exactly what you’re looking for, our expert technicians will help you make an informed and productive decision based on your particular needs.

Indoor Allergens and Germs

Getting rid of allergens in your home is often a major concern. Whether they take the form of dust, pet dander or some other substance, allergens can, quite simply, make people with allergies miserable. Installing an indoor air cleaning system can help to end that suffering by eliminating up to 99.97% of particles measuring 0.3 microns or more in size.

Germs are another major issue when you’re trying to make the air in your house safe for everyone to breathe. They can lurk in the ventilation system of your house and easily spread all over from there. However, by using UV Germicidal Lights, many indoor air cleaners are able to kill these dangerous microbes before they have a chance to make your family sick.

Odors and Smoke

Pet odors, cigarette smoke and cooking smoke can also linger and become an irritant if not addressed appropriately. Smoke especially has a tendency to coat and discolor all the surfaces of your house, on top of making it unpleasant to breathe in general.

These too can be eliminated with the installation of one of our top of the line air cleaning systems. No matter what particular contaminant you’re concerned about, you can rest assured that the system we install will remove it quickly and easily, improving your indoor air quality.
