Air Conditioning Systems

Size matters for your air-conditioning system. Too much or too little can cost you a bundle in the long run. So how can you be sure your air-conditioning system is properly sized? Hi, I’m Dan, your Boulden Brothers answer man. Taking better care of you is the Boulden Brothers way. That’s why we put together this video. Air conditioners cool the air in your home and remove humidity. As it cools, your system blows air across a coil, where moisture condenses into water and drains away. The amount of heating or cooling needed to keep you comfortable is referred to as your system’s load. Factors affecting this load include things like the number and type of your windows, insulation values of your roof, floors, and walls, how many people live in your home, number of appliances, and ceiling height. With that information at hand, the Air-conditioning Contractors of America’s Manual-J guidelines is used to accurately recommend the proper system size expressed in tonnage. One ton of cooling is approximately how much cooling you’d get from melting a ton of ice. It was once common practice to size air conditioners at least a half ton larger than necessary, to reduce customer complaints because a bigger unit typically puts out more cold air. But while an oversized system cools more quickly, it doesn’t run long enough to remove humidity. These short cycles put more wear on your system and use more energy, leading to higher electric bills. The fact is, air conditioners are more efficient during long run cycles. An efficiently sized system balances cycle time and cooling. Your system’s seasonal energy efficiency ratio, or SEER, indicates how much energy is used to produce cooling. While older systems have a SEER of six or less, today’s systems have SEER ratings of 13 or higher. For especially hot climates, check the EER rating, which determines your system’s efficiency during peak demand. Look for units with an EER rating of 11.6 or greater. There’s one more size to consider– the size of replacement cost. While comparing bids, factor in the importance of the installer’s craftsmanship and knowledge. That’s the best assurance a system will keep you comfortable for years to come. Even if you don’t need us right now, Boulden Brothers is here with our on-time guarantee.
